You're looking forward to the vacation. Three weeks out, you're already there in your head. The beach, the meal, the morning without the alarm. The body is already releasing the small chemicals of anticipation. This is pleasure, doing its work. The body reaches forward. The body wants.
K paired pleasure and fear as the same movement. Both are thought projecting forward into time and the body responding. Pleasure projects a desired future and the body leans toward it. Fear projects an undesired future and the body leans away. Same projection. Same body response. Different valence. The hand reaching forward and the hand reaching back is the same hand, doing the same thing.
This is why pleasure and fear can't be separated. The capacity to anticipate good things is the capacity to anticipate bad things. The body that lights up before the vacation is the same body that tightens before the meeting. The mechanism producing both is identical. Most spiritual traditions try to keep the pleasure and lose the fear. K said you can't. Same mechanism. Either both, or neither.
Notice how similar the body texture is in eager anticipation and dreaded anticipation. The forward-lean. The slight breath-hold. The mind racing ahead. The future has pulled the body out of the present, in both directions. The vacation is pleasant and the meeting is unpleasant. The leaving-the-present is the same.
Pleasure and fear are twin outputs of one machine. The machine is thought projecting forward. The body leans. Pleasure pulls forward. Fear pulls back. The pulling is the issue, not the direction. End the projecting and both pulls subside.
