You are the world

Every internal conflict you carry has already gone to war somewhere. There is no private violence.

The news plays. War in some country you've never been to. Protests in some city you don't live in. The body has a small reaction. Sympathy, maybe. Distance, mostly. The thought arrives: that's terrible, I'm glad it's not here, what a world. The thought treats the war as external. The war is external. The fragments fighting it are not external. The fragments fighting it are the same fragments inside you, scaled up.

You are the world. The world is you. K said this almost as often as anything else. He meant it literally. The fragmented self inside you is the same fragmented self in everyone. The conflicts inside you — between what is and what should be, between fragment and fragment — are the same conflicts that produce wars between nations, between religions, between communities. Nothing is private. The internal violence and the external violence are the same violence, at different scales.

This collapses the standard inner-outer distinction. People think I'm working on myself as if the working were separate from the world. K said the world is your inner work, externalized. Every fragment defended internally is a fragment defended somewhere in geopolitics, in marriage, in markets, in religion. The whole human field shares one set of fragmenting moves. Your move is the world's move. The world's move is yours.

Sit with this for a minute and the news becomes harder to watch as background entertainment. The boxer's bloodied face from page one isn't over there. The fight is here, has always been here, is the same fight you're running with your spouse this morning, and the same fight a country is running with its neighbor. Different bodies. One mechanism. The body that watches the news while feeling separate is participating in the war by maintaining the fiction of separation.

The book ends here because the book was always pointed here. The deconstruction was never about the philosophy. It was about the recognition that the fragment in you and the fragment causing the war on the news are not two things. There is one fragmenting move. It happens in you. It happens everywhere. Ending it in yourself is the only end of it that's actually available. The world doesn't change first. The fragment in you doesn't change last. The change is the same change, witnessed in the only place you can witness it.
