Wives, like Sarah, calling him lord

Wives, submit to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won by the conduct of their wives... as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. One verse before the honor-the-weaker-vessel command, Peter names Sarah calling Abraham kyrios as the pattern.

1 Peter 3:1–6 is the wifely half of the household code that concludes at 3:7. Peter's instruction to Christian wives assumes many of them are married to non-Christian husbands (v. 1: even if some do not obey the word) and addresses the pastoral reality that conversion was splitting households. His counsel is to win the husband through conduct, not verbal confrontation. The appeal to Sarah calling Abraham kyrios is pulled from Genesis 18:12 — where Sarah uses the word privately in her thoughts, not as a formal address. Peter's use of it sharpens the deferential reading. The passage sits inside the same letter as the radical co-heir language of v. 7, and the tension is unresolved: the wife is sunklēronomos (co-heir) and also expected to address her husband as kyrios.
